Vascular Flora of Wisconsin

Botany 401: Summer 2009

Welcome to Botany 401- Vascular Flora of Wisconsin

Class totals: over 200 plant species learned, over 400 herbarium specimens made

We learn and practice the principles of plant taxonomy in the field, in the lab and in the herbarium. We go on field trips to many different plant communities throughout southern Wisconsin and at the UW Arboretum and practice identification and using terminology with live and pressed plants in the lab. We learn to identify many vascular plant species and learn the key characteristics of major plant families found here and throughout the world. Students make a plant collection and become familiar with key tools and technologies used in modern plant systematics.
