6 subclasses (Magnoliidae, Hamamelidae, Caryophyllidae, Dilleniidae, Rosidae, and Asteridae)

Class Liliopsida = monocotyledons

5 subclasses (Alismatidae, Arecidae, Zingiberidae, Liliidae, and Commelinidae)

Arthur Cronquist’s subclass Magnoliidae with suite of primitive characters ("Magnolia = primitive")
