I study seasonal photosynthetic activity, leaf chemistry, and hydraulics of forest herbs in conjunction with environmental variables in temperate deciduous forests. I’m looking across representative species of the spring ephemeral, early summer, late summer, evergreen, and winter annual guilds in South Central Wisconsin to test several hypotheses regarding the coevolution of various adaptations for light and carbon capture at different seasons, with potential implications for the ecological distribution of members of different guilds and the assembly of forest herb communities.
