I am interested in the geography and evolution of plants. While working as a Forest Service Botanist in the Pacific Northwest I was fascinated with the puzzles posed by rare plants with peculiar distributions. Why do some species of plants occur only in a narrow region, while their close relatives are widespread and common? And why have some plants evolved the ability to disperse their seeds great distances (e.g. via birds), while others move their seeds only a few meters per year (e.g. carried by ants). Do these traits affect the chances that a species may become rare or localized over time?
